Climate

The humidity in the Azores is quite high; about 75% on average, but regularly above 90%.

The temperature has no extreme values, of course there are occasional outliers, of a minimum of 11°C and a maximum of 33°C, but the temperature usually varies throughout the year between an average of 15°C and 25°C.

The differences between day and night are often minimal, sometimes a few degrees, so probably much less than you are used to.

It rains regularly, which is good for all the greenery. Sometimes light snow can fall on the top of the volcano, but then we are talking about an altitude of 1000 m. or more.

Hail does occasionally occur in winter, but sporadically.

Here are some statistics:

Are these temperatures disappointing? When it is sunny, the humidity often makes it feel warmer and because we are in the subtropics, the direct sunlight is stronger than in more northern regions and you can feel that.

Clothing

The weather can be very changeable, one moment it is sunny and suddenly there is a shower. It won't get really cold, but if the weather changes it can be a bit chilly and also if you go higher up the mountain. Therefore, always take a cardigan or sweater with you. A thin rain jacket can also come in handy.

If you want to walk or hike, be sure to bring good (waterproof) shoes with sufficient profile.

Flights

To fly to Faial, you will always need multiple flights, but the only airline that flies to Faial is SATA / Air Azores, and depending on various circumstances, flights are unfortunately canceled regularly.

We, therefore, advise you to buy all tickets as one package, even if it seems cheaper to book several separate flights. With separate flights, you are on your own if you miss your connection due to force majeure or if it is canceled. In the other case, a new flight plus any overnight stay will be arranged.

You can book all flights as one trip through Azores Airlines or TAP Air Portugal, or booking agencies.

It can sometimes be difficult to find a convenient connection, in that case, you may consider staying 1 or more nights in Lisbon.
